Together Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Here's a dare for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its online premiere on Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like standard physical horror, but within Together lies a profound meditation about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the two stars contribute a special spark to their characters, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The plot begins when Millie and Tim move from the urban environment to the country for her career. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s largely where the tropes cease. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the two discover an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the couple. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The whole movie is a slow burn fright fest, blending elements of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and far away from his support system. He fears the concept of completely losing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is intensified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the type of challenges that come with most partnerships after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, certain partners having disagreements found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and say, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake today.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
