The Tooth Fairy Story Review: Cartoon Journey with a Touch of Kid-Appropriate Preteen Love Story

Throughout this animated journey for preteens, the world of fairies is dedicated to gathering baby teeth of slumbering youngsters and placing treasure beneath where they sleep. Board-riding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (brought to life by Booboo Stewart) shows little enthusiasm about spending his future to gathering baby teeth—a sentiment that’s completely understandable. He’s only slightly more interested in the financial workings of the situation: the fairies deliver the teeth to unseen goblins, who provide metal as payment. However, Van’s interest is piqued when he spots a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who proves to be not at all the hideous gnome he expected.

A Forbidden Bond and Common Enemy

Everything is prepared for an exciting quest with a gentle touch of young love (even though it remains very much suitable for younger kids). The goblin and fairy communities are separated from one another, and there’s nothing like the excitement of secrecy to unite beings as one. The two species as seen here are remarkably alike, yet both maintain prejudiced beliefs about the opposite side. Fairies are supposed to be self-centered types, prone to stealing anything they want, while goblins are reportedly dim-witted, smelly, and primitive, but are in fact bright and technologically advanced.

Of course, this scenario needs a shared foe to unite against, and this is duly provided by some nasty spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret with these guys: they aim to devour the fairies and goblins, and they serve as quite savage, if not especially competent, villains.

Target Audience and Final Thoughts

You won’t find all that many children’s animations targeting the kind of audience that is beginning to have early romances, but are not mature enough for whatever 14-year-olds view these days in lieu of popular teen sagas. Should your youngster is in the right age bracket, it probably won’t to be their next all-time fave, but you could do worse.

A Tooth Fairy Tale releases in movie theaters in Scotland starting October 10 and across the United Kingdom beginning October 24.
