Adolescent Found Deceased After False Allegations of Taking Ashes
One 14-year-old youth was found dead only a few days after being falsely blamed of taking the ashes of a dead infant during a burglary, an inquest has heard.
Heartbreaking Discovery
Kai Lloyd's mother and father found his remains in his bedroom at his Flintshire residence on November 19th, 2021.
Untrue Accusations Begin
The inquest learned how his parent got a communication on November 8th, 2021 via online platforms, from a individual asking if her son was her offspring. The message stated: "Tell him appreciation for breaking into my apartment."
In a testimony read to the proceedings, Lisa Lloyd said the woman had been in the news, asserting her infant's remains had been taken in a burglary - a claim which was untrue.
Law Enforcement Inquiry
An official inquiry from police later concluded the alleged burglary victim had "provided false information" and "evidence shows that said items was never taken in the beginning".
News coverage about the alleged taken ashes generated social media comments, and although the teenager was not named in the posts, his mother said individuals "understood it was him".
The "social media content were extremely distressing", she stated.
Mental Wellbeing Effect
She explained that Kai had been identified with mild attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that disorder, other peoples' opinions genuinely were important to him.
"This must have affected him severely," she said, "especially when this was not true".
Kai was arrested at his residence, but no evidence was found. He was transported to a law enforcement facility and later freed under investigation.
Authorities said they would be in touch, the hearing learned, but had failed to reached out to the relatives by the moment of his passing.
Withdrawal and Anxiety
His mother said her son "withdrew into himself" after the arrest and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had heard anything from the police", because his ADHD meant sometimes "a minute could seem like days".
When she spoke to him about the alleged incident, she said her son informed her he had gone into the house because the woman who resided there had said he could utilize the bathroom anytime he wanted, but refuted removing anything.
Online Bullying
In a combined testimony between her and her husband, the mother said her child was being harassed digitally after the accusations.
The proceedings heard that one young adult encouraged Kai to end his life.
She had no worries on the evening before he died, explaining how she had heard him "laughing and joking".
She described him as a "compassionate, affectionate" young man, and said her "family is totally shattered".
He had been "obviously hiding his worries", she said, adding that he could not bear to have anybody "think bad of him".
School Reaction
The inquest received testimony from school personnel at Connah's Quay High School.
On 8 November, she "overheard some students discussing that the student had been detained and that was the first I learned".
"He informed me... he'd was innocent," she continued.
After the conversation, the educator said she called the family's parents' landline and provided a message saying she had communicated to the student about the accusations.
The proceedings heard his family said they never got that communication.
Formal Conclusion
Senior coroner informed the hearing he would wait for reports regarding what improvements had been made to dealing with individuals with the condition, before determining whether he should make a avoidance of subsequent deaths report.
Providing a narrative conclusion, he stated: "Around 8 November 2021, unsubstantiated allegations were made against the teenager, a young child.
"Probably falsehoods were afterwards embellished and amplified through the medium of online networks.
"On 11 November, he was interviewed by the police and after his interview he was released while inquiries continued."
The coroner determined: "There is no evidence that the acts or omissions of any agency led to or contributed to his death and although it was the outcome of a personal action it is not possible to discern his purpose."
